There’s something about autumn that feels like a natural reset. The evenings get darker, routines shift after the back-to-school rush, and the cosy jumpers come out. For many families, it’s the perfect time to refresh the home. But for ADHD families, an autumn reset is more than seasonal tidying – it’s an essential way to bring calm and energy back into daily life.
If clutter has been weighing you down, autumn is the perfect excuse to start small, reset your space, and give your brain some breathing room.

ADHD brains are wired for novelty and motivation. A seasonal reset gives you that natural sense of a fresh beginning – which can be the spark you need to take action.
Instead of waiting for New Year’s resolutions or spring cleaning, autumn offers a gentler, more grounded way to refresh your space without pressure.
Extra ADHD-friendly tip: Treat autumn like a “mini new year.” Pick just one or two small changes and celebrate them.
Trying to tackle the whole house at once will almost always lead to overwhelm (and avoidance). Instead, pick one zone to reset.
Some ADHD-friendly autumn reset ideas:
Hallway/entryway – clear summer shoes, add a basket for scarves and gloves.
Living room – pack away summer clutter, add cosy blankets.
Kitchen – clear out expired food, make space for warm meal prep. Soup is now on the menu!
Every small win gives you a dopamine boost and builds momentum.
Autumn is all about warmth and comfort – so use that to your advantage. Decluttering isn’t just about removing stuff, it’s about making space for what soothes you.
Think textures, lighting, and atmosphere:
Soft blankets in a basket instead of piles on the sofa.
A reading nook with just your favourite books visible.
Warm lighting or candles to soften the mood.
For ADHD brains, cosy spaces aren’t just nice to look at – they help regulate emotions and reduce stress. Regulating your body is SOOOO important!
Clutter is more than mess. It’s constant visual noise for ADHD brains. Every pile of “stuff” represents unfinished decisions, which leads to mental fatigue.
When you clear even one small space, you reduce that background stress. The result? More mental energy for things you actually want to do – whether that’s playing with your kids, cooking a favourite meal, or simply enjoying a quiet moment.
Extra ADHD-friendly tip: Try a 10-minute timer. Pick one spot, reset it, and stop when the timer beeps. Done is better than perfect.
An autumn reset doesn’t have to be overwhelming. In fact, it works best when it’s small, simple, and tailored to your brain. By focusing on little wins, cosy spaces, and reducing clutter, you’ll create a calmer home that supports your energy – not drains it.
Remember: you don’t have to wait until January or spring to start fresh. Autumn is the perfect time to reset.
